Product Description

CHI KUNG (qigong) means "energy work," the ancient Chinese yogic art that cultivates man's intrinsic internal energy, or vital life force--which the Chinese call "chi" (qi). For centuries, Qigong has been practiced for healing, rejuvenation and longevity―and is the foundation of all systems of Chinese martial, healing, and spiritual arts. Chi Kung For Health is a ground-breaking DVD series by Terry Dunn (creator of Tai Chi For Health dvd’s) that teaches the very rare and powerful "Flying Phoenix Heavenly Healing Chi Meditations"--a remarkable system of medical qigong (there are also martial styles of Qigong, which this is not). It was created more than 400 years ago by legendary Taoist sage Feng Tao Teh of Ehrmei Mountain (Omeishan) in Szechuan Province who traveled extensively throughout China's western frontier and Tibet to acquire his yogic knowledge. This rare and powerful healing art has been impeccably preserved by seven generations of Taoist martial arts masters, and is now available to the public--as a precise, safe, and dynamic program for natural health, healing and illumination. It is comprised of standing and seated, stationary and moving exercises that impart profound health benefits: improved circulation, respiration, metabolism, skeletal strength, neuromuscular function and immunity. Flying Phoenix Qigong is ideal for beginners and advanced students alike because its exercises are simple and fool-proof, can be practiced safely without the supervision of a Qigong master, and yet they impart profound energizing and rejuvenating effects. Because of the deep state of physical relaxation and mind-body integration that it fosters, Flying Phoenix Qigong is also an excellent complement to Tai Chi practice, while being considerably easier to learn and practice. This wonderful hygienic art not only promotes splendid good health and longevity, but it as a complete Qigong system, it provides an invaluable foundation of experience by which one can fully understand and evaluate all methods of yoga and meditation. The five-volume DVD series is beautifully filmed by Mike Hoover. Terry Dunn’s expert, step-by-step instruction is enhanced by multiple camera angles and accompanied by transcendent musical scores by Robert Scott Thompson. In Volume Two, Terry Dunn teaches six basic seated meditations of the Flying Phoenix Celestial Healing Qigong system, a subset called “Monk Serves Wine.” Exercises one through three are very simple and easy-to-do--yet powerful--preparatory meditations that instantly mobilize qi in the upper body and bring it into tangible awareness. Each exercise begins with a short breath-control sequence. “Monk Serves Wine” Exercises four through six consist of simple and elegant sequences of natural upper body movements done in the half-lotus position. Each is performed with total relaxation in set of seven repetitions following a breath-control sequence. The Flying Phoenix seated exercises develop fine control over basic energy (qi) pathways governed by eyes, mind, movement and breath, and ultimately bring all organ functions under the regulation of the subconscious mind. (60 min.)

Review

This video series by the well known qigong instructor, Terry Dunn, takes you step by step through the Flying Phoenix Heavenly Healing Chi Meditations, a part of the martial art, White Tiger Kung-fu, which was attributed to the Taoist monk Feng Do Duk, a legendary healer from Ehrmei Mountain in Szechuan province. He passed on the art to the ancestors of the Doo family in 1644. As in most complete qigong schools, which usually include a standing, a sitting as well as moving forms, this series spans five volumes. The first, called Five Basic Standing Exercises, consists of five standing meditations, each with distinct postures and breathing patterns. the video includes side views and panels explaining the breathing patterns and allowing us to view Terry's movements from different angles. It is said in the qigong world that to build qi you need to do standing meditation. Here we can learn five different ways to do that. Each meditation uses various hand and body postures with poetic names such as Monk Holding the Pearl, Willow Leaf Palm, Bending the Bows, and Monk Gazing At the Moon. In the second volume, called Six Seated meditations, we are taught six different seated meditations. Three are basic, warm-up meditations just as powerful as the three Monk Serves Wine that follow. These meditations again use hand and upper body postures first practiced in Volume One. We are taught basic breathing for meditation and then led slowly through various hand and body postures. The first four can be done singly for at least five minutes. The last six should be done sequentially in sets of seven repetitions for each exercise. Volume Three teaches Two Intermediate Standing Exercises and teaches two Tai Chi-like Forms only they are practiced more slowly than Tai Chi and are relatively much short routines. Building on what we learned in Volume One of the standing exercises, we are led through these simple yet powerful qigong forms. Terry guides us through the form in several creative ways, using different angles, including an overhead, so that we may view the movements from every way. Because of the great interest in qigong in the West, it is important to have available bona fide teachings by bona fide teachers. Too often students end up learning a little bit of this form and a little bit of another, while never learning any complete system. This series is a good example of a serious and gifted instructor who offers a complete system of qigong to the serious student. --by Solala Towler, Editor of Empty Vessel, Journal of Contemporary Taoism:

It is very calming. Because it is seated, most people could do the movements. My arms did feel sore the first few days but then I got used to it very quickly. And I always felt so much more grounded afterwards. 18 of 18 people found the following review helpful: Flying Phoenix Chi Kung, February 23, 2007 By Tony "James" (Greenville, SC. USA) - s Amazon • This is by far the best presentation of this Taoist set of exercises and although seemingly simple to practice they have good effect. Definitely recommend most of Terry Dunn's productions which are professional and easy to follow especially if a teacher is not accessible from where you live. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, September 11, 2009 By M. PENNER (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) • First of all, the DVD is the second one of a series and is very well produced. It was filmed on a beautiful location and has soft music playing in background. This program presents 06 seated meditations from the Flying Phoenix Celestial Healing Discipline. 03 of them are called basic and require simple movements or no movement at all. The next 3 meditations, called"Monk Serves Wine" requires one to memorize some choreography, but they are also very simple. Terry Dunn teaches and explains each movement a couple of times, before initiate the meditations. After following him in the demonstration, you will be ready to practice the complete meditation by our own. Each of them takes about 10-15 minutes to be completed and they all have fast and profound effects. Practicing some of them for a week and you will feel energized. I've been practicing different types of qigong over the last decade and this one became my favorite one for its simplicity and powerful effects. Terry Dunn has done a great job . I highly recommend. --J.Kirby, Tony James, M. Penner's recent reviews submitted to amazon dot com

Posted 01 February 2013 - I'm fairly new to this site, but I'm now in my eighth month of Flying Phoenix Practice. After benefiting so much from this system, the least I could do is join the forum and share some of my experiences! I find this practice truly amazing, but in a normal way. I say normal because the results I have seen have been consistent, tangible, and practical in my daily life. Some of the other members' spiritual experiences have been riveting to read about but I haven't been blessed with any experience of such order. I have to admit that when I first started Flying Phoenix, that's the kind of thing I was looking for. But I can say with confidence now that even if I don't receive any celestial visitations or experience the Blue Light Sifu Terry has been talking about, I'll be 100% content to keep practicing as I have been. Here are some of the ways Flying Phoenix Qigong has helped me, in a roughly chronological order: – Sleep Regulation: I had suffered from very irregular sleep for as long as I could remember, which was diagnosed as borderline insomnia. My sleep was at its worst in college, when I'd average around 4-5 hours a night, with at least one night a week of no sleep. Sometimes I'd just medicate myself with alcohol and other drugs. After practicing FP for a few weeks, my sleep began to improve. Within two months or so, I was sleeping eight hours a night. Truly incredible. – Improved Digestion: I've been a very conscientious eater for the last 3 or 4 years, usually sticking to a strict Paleo Diet. During times that my diet was too difficult to follow (when I lived in China, for example), I enjoyed food to the fullest (difficult not to do in Sichuan) and often felt the after effects to the fullest. Well, I spent a few months in Germany recently, during which time I regularly did 30 minutes to an hour of FPCK a day. I began my time dieting strictly, and stopped at some point, expecting calamity in my stomach. But to my surprise, the good digestion I was noticing carried over quite naturally - something that definitely didn't happen the previous time I was in Germany. – More Energy: This seems to be a universal experience here, so I won't go into it. – Hair Regrowth: According to Ayurveda, I'm a Pitta, or fire-dominant individual. Like most pittas, I've experienced some degree of hair loss, though I can't complain too much, since I still have a full head of hair. The effects are unmistakable; I am losing far less hair, if any at all. I see new hairs growing as well. I feel like I'm at an interesting borderline in my practice: I can actually notice the strength of my hair and the number of hairs that fall out with combings, showers, etc correlating with the amount I practice. This is quite motivating. – Emotions, Awareness, etc: I'm lumping these together since I don't have the knowledge to analyze these different aspects of the psyche separately. Being abroad for a few months gave me a chance to practice away from the persons who make up my usual social circle. As I said, I'm a Pitta, which means I tend to have fiery and intense emotions, anger being one of my biggest faults. After coming home to the US with some practice under my belt, I began to realize how unnecessary my anger was. This is one reason I called the practice normal; I didn't have to suppress these feelings, I just began to understand things in a way that non-angry people do. Still have some work to do, though. – Meditation: Before I started FPCK I was doing Yantra Yoga from a DVD. I'd also done about a year of Tibetan Dzogchen practices, like Tsa Lung and 9 Breathings of Purification. I stopped Yantra Yoga and Tibetan practices recently and began focusing more on FP and zazen. Meditating is just so much more enjoyable now with a little bit of FP under my belt. Practice has been the highlight of my day! --Flying Phoenix Chi Kung discussion thread on thedaobums.com blog-site
